Do you ever find yourself worrying about situations that have not taken place and may never happen? Do you often feel hopeless about yourself, your world and your future? Perhaps you often blame yourself for things that “go wrong”, but you don’t know why? Do you go over past events trying to “fix” them? Do you engage in behaviour that harms your health or wellbeing, but you feel as though you can’t control it? Do you find yourself holding irrational beliefs?

Cognitive-behavioural therapy (C.B.T.)

CBT is a form of psychotherapy (talking therapy) that is the therapy of choice for the most common psychological difficulties such as depression and anxiety disorders (panic attacks, agoraphobia, OCD, generalised anxiety disorder and social anxiety, for example). It is effective in treating other psychological disorders such as phobias and can be used to treat Tinnitus. ( www.nice.org.uk & www.nhs.uk) It is also effective in addressing anger regulation problems, work related stress and problems associated with maltreatment in childhood.

If you are reading this you may have already discussed CBT or counselling with your doctor, or are interested in undertaking CBT as a treatment. CBT is available privately with Equanimity CBT and through health insurance or in some cases supported  by  employers.

CBT is :

  • Suitable for most adults and young people.
  • Time limited, between 8 – 15 sessions on average, making it very cost effective.
  • Clearly structured
  • Easily understood.
  • A form of therapy that is undertaken with you, not done to you.
  • Supported by clinical trials in its effectiveness.
  • Allows you to develop skills and knowledge that you can use throughout your life.
